Right-sized automation on Siemens LOGO!

When the task allows, we build industrial control on standard Siemens LOGO! 8 instead of an expensive industrial PLC — cutting initial project cost by more than €2000 (on the control part alone). Delivered in food, woodworking and water treatment.

“Do you really need the industry standard if the task is simple?”

We start from the need and evaluate the actuator in reverse: how complex the motion and logic really are. Where the task allows, we use the reliable but far cheaper Siemens LOGO! 8 — instead of paying for PLC capabilities that this job will never use.

Three industries, one approach

We applied the same principle — right-sized control on LOGO! — in three very different places:

Food industry

Ice-cream line — cup loading and unloading

Task
Automate loading of ice-cream cups and unloading of the finished product onto a conveyor.
Challenge
Temperature changed the chain length, and the tensioner’s capacity was insufficient — causing timing, speed and position drift.
Solution
A frequency converter (VFD) adapts the conveyor speed, compensating for the chain change and holding correct position and timing.
Woodworking

Saw — clamping and lowering on pneumatics

Task
Control the saw cycle with fixed positions: clamping cylinders hold the material, then a controlled saw lowering.
Solution
LOGO! 8 function-block logic (FBD) drives 5/2 pneumatic valves — clamping and lowering in sequence, with safe restart (Rem memory). The screenshots on this page are from this program.
Water treatment

Pump and valve sequence control

Task
Control the steps of a water-treatment process — pumps, valves and timing/sequence logic — on the same LOGO! principle.

What we do

  • Understand the need and assess how complex the control really is
  • Pick the right controller — LOGO! or PLC — by the task, not by habit
  • Design and program the control logic (FBD), with a VFD where needed
  • Select and supply the actuation — pneumatics, valves, cylinders — from stock
  • Commission, verify the sequence and hand over

Why it matters

An industrial PLC isn’t always necessary. For a simple motion sequence or conveyor control, Siemens LOGO! 8 is industrially reliable, quick to program and more than €2000 cheaper on the control part alone. That is a direct saving for the client — with no compromise on reliability.

And because it’s built on standard components, the client can maintain and extend it themselves rather than being tied to a closed platform.

On LOGO!, PLC and cost

How much can you save using LOGO! instead of a PLC?

In these projects the control (PLC) part alone became more than €2000 cheaper by using standard Siemens LOGO! 8 instead of an industrial PLC — with no loss of reliability. The exact saving depends on the I/O count and the task.

When do you actually need a full PLC, not LOGO!?

When the process is large, fast or complex — many axes, fast closed-loop control, safety functions, SCADA networks. Then we choose a PLC. For simple motion sequences, conveyors and pump/valve control, LOGO! is exactly the right size.

Can LOGO! control conveyor speed?

Yes — together with a frequency converter (VFD). On the ice-cream line we used this to compensate for chain-length change (from temperature) by adapting conveyor speed and holding correct position and timing.

Does INO Automation both program and supply the components?

Yes. We cover the whole chain — assessing the need, choosing the controller, LOGO! programming, supplying pneumatics and VFDs from stock, and commissioning.
