Pneumatics is simple when the selection happens in the right order. Most problems — a slow cylinder, a “banging” end, too little force — come not from a bad part, but from a wrong choice in one of these steps.
How much to push/lift and how far? Bore Ø and stroke follow from load and pressure. Take a safety factor ≥2 for vertical motion.
A 3/2 valve for single-acting, a 5/2 (or 5/3 with mid position) for double-acting. 24 V DC is the industrial standard voltage.
Desired speed sets the required flow — and from that the valve port and tube Ø. An undersized tube is the most common cause of a slow cylinder.
Filter + regulator (FRL) before every machine. Dirty, wet air shortens valve and seal life several times over.
Check the kinetic energy at end of stroke — is the built-in cushion enough. For vertical loads: a blocking valve or brake against dropping without pressure.
