Brand cross-reference guide

Can an SMC cylinder be replaced with a Festo, Camozzi or Airtac? Short answer: there is no exact part-number match — each brand has its own protected code system. But what DOES exist: many standard cylinders are built to shared ISO dimension standards, so their mounting sizes (not the code) do match.

⚠️ Honestly: nowhere, not even at the manufacturers, is there a public "SMC code X = Festo code Y" table — understandably, no maker officially recommends buying a competitor’s equivalent. But brands do declare which ISO/NFPA/VDMA standard each series meets — that’s what we use below. This tool helps you judge WHETHER two cylinders likely fit mechanically, not claim they are identical. Before ordering, ALWAYS compare both datasheets.

How to measure your existing cylinder

If you can’t find the code or it’s worn off — photograph and measure these 5 dimensions, then send them to us.

  • ① Body length — helps calculate stroke if it’s not printed on the body
  • ② Mounting type and hole pitch — foot / flange / trunnion / clevis, plus hole spacing
  • ③ Bore — outer body Ø or piston Ø from the datasheet
  • ④ Stroke — distance the rod travels from retracted to extended
  • ⑤ Rod diameter and thread — usually M6–M20 metric, but check with a caliper
  • Port thread (not shown) — usually G1/8–G1/2, on the cylinder ends

Tubing and fittings

These fit better than cylinders — metric push-in fittings (4/6/8/10/12mm tube) with a G-thread port are the de-facto standard used the same way across Europe by Festo, SMC, Camozzi, Legris (Parker) and Norgren.

A hard rule, not a grey zone: G/BSPP (55°, parallel, European standard) and NPT (60°, tapered, US standard) threads are NOT compatible, even if the size sounds similar. Mixing them damages the thread or causes a leak. Metric thread (straight or tapered) is yet a third system. Always specify the thread TYPE, not just the size.
